After a very successful first day on our WH Summer meet yesterday we opted for Ben Hee as it was to be the shortest hill day of our weekend with the forecast being pretty atrocious to say the least. The starting point was easily found at West Merkland just to the West of the cottage which meant a short walk on the road and across the bridge then turning up the locked gate track on your left. The weather was not looking at all promising when we started off and the waterproofs were on from the word go.

Having rained for most of the night the track was well waterlogged but nothing as bad as the path later on, deffinately a day for gaiters

At the point where there is a wee pile of stones indicating the waterlogged path on the South of the burn
2b.JPG
No this was not going to be a day of many photographs, both overhead and underfoot conditions hard going
3.JPG
But still smiling on the participants, making the most of the day, and enjoying ourselves
4.JPG
A brief lapse in the rain, a stop for some refreshments
5.JPG
Yep the waterproofs were again to start letting in the wind driven rain, but there is a job to be done so let's just do it

Following the raging burn further up looking for a crossing point

Having managed to cross the burn heading on up the water soaked ground. Later on it becomes less steep and more rocky

7.JPG
The wind was becoming stronger and colder and some balance was required at this point
8.JPG
Taking shelter behind the trig point
9.JPG
Not hanging about at the summit we head on down where the wind has lightened. Quite steep and very slippy in places
10.JPG
As always happens a glimmer of sun trying to shine through, which is always nice if you can dry out a little before jumping back into the car

The three hardy hill buddies with the sun now out and with some of the over clothes drying on the adjacent gate while more photographs are taken

A well deserved meal at the Lochinver Pie shop, with the Venison and cranberry highly recommended

Indefatigable Rod - simply indefatigable - you always manage to squeeze a great report and trip from the worst of conditions.

Enjoyed your report. Ben Hee was the first report (if incomplete) that I wrote for Walk Highlands, when I was still cycling then walking. I cycled from Lairg to the start of the walk and then had to cycle back. Shame you didn't have great views. I remember the midges being ferocious when I was retrieving my bike from behind the wheelie bins.

Hi Nigel, come on you would be the same  do what you can, too far to travel for no blue balloons. Company was great though, which helps under these circumstances don't you agree :D
