French IGN maps

French IGN maps

Postby Lmitch » Mon Aug 15, 2016 11:08 am

Hi

I'm off to the Pyrenees and am getting my head round the IGN 1:50 maps.

I can see grid square easting and northing numbers but what system do they relate to?

A refuge location was given in Latitude and longitude but I couldn't make that fit the map

I know the GPS system is WGS/84. Is there a similar app to OS locate for the smart phone that anyone can recommend?

All interesting but I am a bit surprised by my ignorance given this is not my first time in the French mountains. Maybe it is old age forgetfulness creeping in!
cheers

It is indeed wgs84 however you need to check if the map has been printed with this in mind. It'll say gps compatible on the front cover.
I use iphigenie when in France and just pay a small amount for access to the mapping for my trips.
