I had arranged to do a walk on Saturday, however the weather forecast wasn't good so decided at short notice to get a hill in after work. I was really pleased that Amy could join me!

It was a lovely evening, hazy with a light breeze.

We parked at the large lay-by on Dunmail Raise, over the stile and then walked north for half a mile or so before entering a large patch of bracken. My intention was to follow the Raise Beck gully up and down, however the path we were on took us up the east side of the hill. It was the type of path that gave you false hope that the summit was in sight, only to find out you had to climb a bit further, and a bit further, and a bit......

The steepness meant we had to stop for numerous photo opportunities!! :D :D and a light breeze was welcome. Climbing higher, the views of the surrounding hills were good and as we neared the top, the late evening sunlight was terrific.

Time for another breather!

I appreciate that we set off late, nevertheless, it was the middle of August on a sunny day, but we didn't see another person on the hills, either close up or far away. Quite amazing.

After a short stop at the top to take in the views, have a drink and some chocolate, we headed down the path in the northerly direction which follows a derelict stone wall. Grisedale Tarn soon came into view and with the backdrop of St Sunday Crag it made a real picture!

To the west, the sun was setting so we didn't linger. We reached the low point at the head of Raise beck and the followed the path down the gully eventually reaching the junction with are outward route and we were soon back at the car.

A good short walk for late in the day. Yes, you can find a quiet route in the Lake District during nice weather, even in a popular area like around Grasmere.

That must have been really enjoyable MR, and to have the place to yourselves in such fantastic conditions even more so. Lovely shots of a hike well worth sneaking in late on
