Wednesday, 18th. August, 1982
This was day ten of an unsupported trek from Lochluichart to Glenfinnan with my brother and, having wandered round the Munros to the north of Loch Mullardoch on the previous day, Nick and I were heading for Affric. We took down our little Vango tent and set off along the northern shore of the loch and beneath the dam in the usual dodgy August weather before starting to head up the slopes. We were anticipating a good day out.
The initial climb, though, was hard work as the sun shone and we found ourselves engaged in a muggy fight through waist and even head high heather before we broke out onto the ridge just east of Toll Creagach. Heading west, the ridge was grassy and wide but, once we reached the top of Tom a' Choinich, it became much more interesting - magnificent all the way through to Carn Eighe. From there it was a short step across to Mam Sodhail but the weather deteriorated quickly and we headed down in hard hitting hail showers which gave just occasional glimpses of the sea to the west. It didn't take long, though, until we were down on the strath and, cold, wet and hungry for company after so many consecutive days out, we decided to call in at the Youth Hostel and see if anyone was about. The place was relatively deserted but it was, nevertheless, a pleasure to talk to the warden in a dry, warm hostel and to plan our route to Glen Shiel and beyond into Knoydart.
We still had a long way to go.
