Grey Corries

Grey Corries

Postby Fairweather Softie » Fri Mar 31, 2017 1:43 pm

Hi All,

Just how rough a track is the access in from Corriechoille?

The description says "very rough"

Suppose what I'm asking is will my wee Focus be destroyed in the attempt?

Thanks in advance.

Maybe - it is fairly bad - been up 4 times. It once killed some suspension parts on a punto I used to have (sports suspension), but the £80 to fix was worth it for the braw day we had :D The trick for hill baggers is to have a good handy garage/mechanic in your life that will fix things mega cheap

My Focus made it but anything more than 2nd gear is probably a bit much.

The drive up the hill to Corriechollie is bad enough. I'd find somewhere on the track/road beforehand to park and walk up- unless you're in a 4x4 or you've money to burn on suspension parts

A bit of a mixed response, probably give it a go really slowly. Is there any half decent places to pitch a tent near where you park the car as I don't see the point in driving up it twice. I'd be as well camping and doing the 4 over 2 days.

Sounds like you have your answer, but to add anyway, I took a Hyundai i10 (tiny car!) up there recently with no problems. Just take it easy and it's fine.

You can camp right next to where you park. No problem.

Why two days it's a brilliant walk over the 4 in a day

It's a wee bit rough. But I've driven up worse.

If I remember, you can drive all the way to a dirty big wooden gate at the start of some pines.

The walk in towards Stob Ban is worse. Hammers the knees :?

Your map suggests you have yet to cover the two Easians as well. If you're going to camp, you could include the two Easians and the four Grey Corries, eg report here with option instead of staying in the bothy ?....unless you want just to have one long day  - cheers :)

It's no problem for the car. It's not much more than a mile of track to the top parking space. I wouldn't fancy camping there, it is wide open rough ground with sheep everywhere.
I was up that way last week. I parked at Spean Bridge train station with no particular plan. Cycled from there to the Lairig Leacach bothy. I reckon it took me about 2 hours, there was some deep snow on the track. I went up Stob Ban. From the summit back to the car took me 2 hours. 1 hour walk 1hour bike. The bothy is small but looks all right to stay in. It's a great cycle and you miss some impressive river scenery whizzing in in the car.
All the best it's a great area :D
View from Stob Ban last Friday.

Got my Honda Accord up there in winter easily enough, you do need to take it steady but its not too bad unless its deteriorated badly.
