Fellbarrow and Low Fell are two Wainwright fells I wasn't aware of until I started looking for walks in the hills on the western side of the Lakes, when I realised they were around the Loweswater area I had to include them on our trip to Cockermouth.
On Saturday we did the five fells to the south of Loweswater, with the need to get back home on Sunday, we decided on a short day that would give us two new ticks and the chance to start the journey home in good time.
We left the travelodge early in order to get parked in the parking area by the phone box at NY118224, the weather was fantastic again so an early start made sure we managed to park where we wanted.
We set off walking at 9 o'clock on the path that leads to the track towards Mosser.
Off we go.
This is easy walking, some of the bushes were flowering, they looked like Hawthorne
but it seemed a tad early for those, the view back to Loweswater was nice through the trees.
Fellbarrow can be seen in the distance to the right, a rounded lump that looks nothing more than steady.
We left the track at around NY121249 and followed a soggy ATV track that lead directly up hill.

The path leads to a level section from which you can see the summit cairn.
On the summit there's the cairn and a trig point, the views are not bad at all.
Low Fell looks a long way from here but the undulating ridge between the two summits looks enjoyable, after a few photos we got on our way.
Following the fence we continued along the ridge, there are a couple of small dips and rises, first over Smithy Fell then over Sourfoot Fell,
No real need for this gate anymore
Following the fence on the left side from Sourfoot Fell, this takes you into another dip, a gate and on to a well defined track heading for Low Fell.
The first top is the higher on Low Fell and officially the summit and the Wainwright at 423m.
The 412m top, however, is a much better view point and has the bigger cairn.

For our descent we retraced back to the dip between the two tops and then headed west down the path leading to Darling Fell. In the dip we decided not to do Darling Fell, it's a shame we didn't because it would have been a nice little add on, ah well, maybe next time.
We walked down the old Mosser road for about 400m, when we reached the plantation there's a path running along the wall taking you down to the road, a small short cut but it reduces the distance along the road.
Back at the car in good time, we had our lunch then set off home, we'd had two great days out in near perfect weather, will it continue?, lets hope so.
