Isle of Skye or Isle of Arran??

Isle of Skye or Isle of Arran??

Postby marie1328 » Sun Apr 30, 2017 4:36 am

This September we want to do about 5-6 days of trekking on one of the islands and hope to wildcamp. We havn't decided which to do, the Isle of Skye or the Isle of Arran...
Any suggestions from anyone who have done either?
Thank you so much!

It depends on how wild you like your wilderness. And how unpopulated/desolate you like your islands. And the weather. Skye would be a lot wilder than Arran, but exposed to worse weather. September often has nice conditions though, with crisp autumnal air doing away with midgies, the foliage turning to autumn colours and the crowds disappearing back to the cities. The two islands have very different atmospheres, Arran being quite Southern, much like Kintyre and Ayrshire, while Skye is very much of the North; Hebridean and North West Highlands.

Both islands are worth exploring, but have a look at the Skye Trail.

You won't go far wrong with either, but I'd tend towards Skye for its wilder feeling. Skye trail would be great.

I would agree with Mal Grey. But they're both fabulous.

I'm heading to Arran this Saturday to do the Coastal Way. I'm intending on using it to do my 1st trail report, so hopefully (if I can figure out how to get photos on here without them being tiny) there will be something to help you decide

I prefer the north west but Arran is a lot closer and I'm hoping I can still get spells of solitude :?

Ive never been to Arran, but I go to Skye 3 or 4 times a year and it has everything any walker could wish for. From easy coastal walks leading to beautiful beaches or into the mighty Cuillin you really are spoiled for choice. And if the weather gets too much for the wild camping there are plenty reasonable bunkhouses dotted all over the island.
I find it difficult to go anywhere else theses days as I love it so much. So I might be a bit bias :)
