South Glen Shiel Ridge 23rd September

South Glen Shiel Ridge 23rd September

Hello all.

I am heading up to do all 9 (!) of the SGSR on the 23rd of September on what will probably be my last proper outing of the season and will very nicely get me to the half way point. My plan at the moment is to leave from work in Stirling on the Friday afternoon, camp and start walking half an hour before dawn on Saturday morning to be back home in Glasgow late on Saturday. At the moment though I'm going to have to hitch a lift between the end and start so ideally if someone with a car either wants to come along or just give me lift you would be very welcome.

Had the same dilemma 3 times in Glenshiel.

Walked the road once.
Got a lift another time.
Managed to catch the bus another time.

If you can borrow a bike or have one then I'd take the car to the end and cycle down to cluanie and chain the bike up.

Or wait for someone at the start who is hopefully doing all 9 ( good luck with this) and organise a car at the end and one at cluanie

All the best. I was buckled after 7 :D

We plan on doing the 7 on the SGR on the 23rd, but it's very much weather dependant (this will be 3rd attempt). We'll have a car either end so happy to help with a lift.

I can let you know nearer the time what our plans are, but it will be an early start as I need to drive back to Aberdeen after.

Would've tagged along again, David/Bruce, but otherwise engaged that weekend. Did the 7 earlier this year (plus the demoted Corbett) but, would happily have returned for the Saddle & SnS.

Never mind, some other time, hope the cars and weather work out.

Quite fancy tackling this lot again, especially while there are enough daylight hours.
Will be driving over from Fife nice and early - as usual the weather will dictate.

I have decided to tackle these West to East for three reasons.

1. I can't wimp out after 7

2. It gets the big climb out of the way at the beginning of the day (that was definitely a bonus when we did the Fannichs in May)

and most importantly of all...

3. I am always walking towards the pub! 8)

I have added my proposed route to my year 2000 walks blog.

My plan remains to start walking between 6 and 7 in the morning.

We decided to take advantage of yesterday's weather window & did the 7 on the ridge. Really long day but really enjoyable.

Good luck next weekend David, hope you get the weather we got yesterday & not our Fannichs rain.

The theory is quite good, however from memory (which isn't great) when I was there 4 years ago the western end which would be the ascent is very boggy lower down. The drawback is obvious I wouldn't fancy walking 8 hours or so with damp feet. As things stand the forecast does look OK, but this is Scotland, I will say no more.

It was still very boggy indeed on Saturday Martin. We took the landrover track round the back of the first one which was a great road to get in.

Not sure I'd fancy the ascents from West to East as were a few descents we did where we commented we wouldn't have fancied going up that.

Brilliant day out either way though.
