East of the Devils Elbow 26km 1246m 7hr 19/09/1992
We park just down from a clagged in Cairnwell ski resort @GR 148799 and gear up. Not the predicted weather but were here now, so make the best of it. A footbridge crosses the burn for a path that winds up round the side of Carn Dubh, past old shielings and waterfalls to reach a hut. The way becomes steeper and we`re in clag, past heather and stony sections for the cairn of Carn an Tuirc@ 1019m. I have in the car my latest book A Munroist`s Log by Butterfield and predictions that a number of these Munros could be demoted. So get them while you can. SE on short heather, grass and scoured ground meets a fence, then a dogleg for the top of Tolmount @ 958m. It lies above “Jock`s road” we had thought to cover these on a winter visit to Glen Doll going to Crow Craigies then back over Tolmount, Tom Buide, Mayar and Driesh. Deep snow put paid to that idea. All that could be seen of the signpost for Mayar were the two directional arms level with the snow. We eat at the crags. Unseen, the roar of water below can be heard. We move on. Reverse course, pick up the fence, its just 2km for Tom Buidhe @ 957m. Easy walking. Over Ca Whims and onto the mass of Cairn a Claise @1064m cairn. Rest in a stone shelter here, then walk a path past odd stone piles round Garbh-choire and the bowl of Caenlochan glen. A rise to the trig point and cairn of Glas Maol @1068m. A wee wind stirs the clag and ski tows appear as the mist thins. SW then S finds the stepped ridge of Creag Leachach @987m. showing clear views down the glen. We consider a drop down to the road below, but return to a bypass path on the W side of Bathach Beag for Meall Odhar@ 922m. Past the ski tows and centre to the road back and the car. A somewhat bleak day. Six easy munros, in a harsh landscape, with hares running uptop; deer and sheep lower down, folk at the café. It was wet but no real rain. A good compass and navigational workout.
