The forecast was promising for a return visit to the Grey Corries after a stormy visit in September when gales and rain shortened the day. Parking just south of Corriechoille we were away by 08.00am and planned the circular route up the Lairig Leacach path in towards the bothy before heading west for Stob Ban and then north to Stob Choire Claurigh.

It was bright and sunny with a chilly westerly wind keeping the temperatures low but it was a glorious morning.

The approach to Stob Ban is steady and straight forward but the increasing ice on the path called for the security of the crampons for the final rise onto the summit. Not a lot of snow about but the iced boulders made walking tricky.

Summit view south to Glen Nevis, Mamores and Glencoe

The drop off from the summit towards the north bealach was a mass of ice boulders with little snow and without crampons would have been an uncomfortable decent. As it was, we were down in no time and stopped for tea after finding a semi shelter spot.

The cloud started to build coming from the west which lead to some stunning light through the Mamores and Glen Nevis range.

Just before the summit of our second munro of the day a snow shower moved in which masked the views for the next 20mins. Unfortunately, we were off down the north ridge before blue sky and sunshine returned. It just wasn't a day for hanging around the tops.....

The gradual drop down the north shoulder to Stob Coire na Gaibhre makes for an easy decent to pick up the track just before heading back into the wood. I superb winter day which had it all.

If you fancy tagging along take a look at a short movie of our route to get a feel of the day........

Wow, stunning photos and great vid of what looks like a beautiful day. You definitely know how to make the most of it. Enjoyed all the crampons on, crampons off boot-stuff on those boulders too!

Hello All,

Many thanks for the positive feedback to the report. It was a cracking winter day and fingers crossed we'll get many more through this season. Stob Ban is in a stunning location for viewing the surrounding giants... Having been fortunate to visit through varying seasons and different routes this wee beauty never fails to impress..... stay safe...

Regards, Charlie.

Really terrific. Some of those photos are superb. The snow always adds something special.
The views from up there are tremendous aren't they?

I did two of them ( Claurigh and Laoigh) with Stob Ban - which was a long day - and the third ( Choinnich Mor) from the Glen Nevis side, but they're a really great set of hills however you do them.
