Another possibility might be something like the Kelvin Walkway from the middle of Glasgow out to Milngavie. When I did it I started at Kelvinbridge subway, but I think the official start is by the Clyde. The first half is through parks, but there is a surprising amount of wildlife on the Kelvin, I saw kingfishers in the first 5 minutes. Then get a bus or train back into Glasgow.
Or you could get said train or bus to Milngavie and do the first day of the West Highland Way, either to Drymen or Balmaha, and get the bus back to Balloch and train to Glasgow from there.
