31st. January, 1987:
I was in the middle of a winter climbing trip with Tim Raffle, an old school mate, before doing my Winter ML Assessment at Glenmore Lodge and, having had an over-long struggle on Hadrian's Wall on the north side of the Ben followed by an uncomfortable bivi in the summit shelter, we decided to spend the following day doing some hill walking instead. As a result, we found ourselves parking near the top end of Glen Nevis rather late in the day and, without looking at the map too carefully, just clambered up the nearest ridge. Looking back over thirty years now, I don't remember too much about the day except that the weather and the views were sunny and that the ridge between Sgurr an Iubhair and Sgurr a'Mhaim was quite good fun in hard snow. We got down early enough for a beer before heading round to Nancy's at Fersit and then going on to have an unsuccessful outing on an out of condition Creag Meagaidh the next day.
Warning
Please note that hillwalking when there is snow lying requires an ice-axe, crampons and the knowledge, experience and skill to use them correctly. Summer routes may not be viable or appropriate in winter. See winter information on our skills and safety pages for more information.
