The western section of the loch is private estate and should not be followed, we spoke with the very nice estate manager who pointed us around the eastern side instead.

20 March 2019: Heavy machinery is currently working on the track along the east side of the loch making for very muddy conditions. No doubt preparing future access to the recently tree planted eastern slopes of Loch Hill. Regarding the previous comment about access to the east side of the loch - I always follow the track shown on the map up to Northshield Rings and never had any problems with access. Saying that when I was young chap (about 50+ years ago!) the estate was well known for positioning a keeper at the end of the access road to make sure everyone went around the east side!

Walked the Northshield Rings route again yesterday and a new sign has appeared at the gate on the track at the start of the woods on the west side of the loch "Private - Estate Access Only". I had no problems but would be interested to know if anyone else using this fairly popular walk had any access difficulties.
The track round the east side of the loch has been 'improved' to take heavy forestry vehicles as they are felling the wood above the southeast end of the loch so its not very pleasant to walk on at present.
