Best way to have route maps offline for field use?

Best way to have route maps offline for field use?

Postby BlueRidge777 » Fri Aug 09, 2019 2:09 pm

We love the on line route maps and descriptions, but what would be best to use on an iphone out of cell range, but with GPS still active? We have tried to decipher how to use View Ranger, but it is a bit mystifying, with the myriad of maps and credits, etc. In short, what is the best way to have the superb Walkinghighlands maps on our phone (or ipad)? It would be nice to be able to download a dozen of so for an extended trip.

If View Ranger, is there one Scotland map that we can use for all routes, or do we have to go individual tiles?

Thanks for your advice.

Base maps and the lines of our routes are 2 different things.

For Ordnance Survey basemaps, you can either buy tiles on Viewranger - even just for one walk you are doing - or you can buy all Scotland, or you can instead pay an annual subscription fee that lets you download whichever areas you want. In all cases you can then store the maps for offline use. This is a Viewranger service; Walkhighlands itself doesn't have any maps you can use offline.

Our routes are separate but can be shown overlaid on maps. You use the links to get the whole route in Viewranger - including the description and photos for offline use. Or you can just download the gpx file and import that into Viewranger so you can overlay it on your maps.

Thanks for your help. As a followup, I wrote to ViewRanger and said>

"I just signed up for Premium w/Great Britain for a 7 day trial. I use the Walkinghighlands site regularly. Once I locate a walk of interest there and go to View Ranger to get the route use offline, do I still need to pay with credits to have the route downloaded? The webpage indicates that credits be used."

They responded:

"Sorry, those routes are not included in the subscription - the subscription gives you the colour Ordnance Survey routes and several features. More than 8% of routes are free, but the others are charged for, those charges being set by the route publisher themselves. But Walk Highlands do have the GPX files on their site - so if you download and open that in ViewRanger, rather than the link, you'll get a free copy of the route."

Is it somehow possible to download all (not at once) of the WalkingHighlands route and descriptions and pictures for offline use free of charge? ViewRanger seems to say that it is not. Are you the "route publisher."

Thanks.

Tom

Viewranger's reply is exactly correct. You can either get Walkhighlands routes within Viewranger - which gives you the description and photos and track available offline on whatever mapping you have - or you can just download a GPX track (no description or photos) and import that in Viewranger free of charge.
