We went to Dornoch for a change and did some short walks on the east coast to avoid the heat and midges. Then noticed on the weather forecast that there would be more of a breeze the next day so decided on a long planned walk to Glendhu bothy with a view to seeing what other walks might be doable from there in future. Turned out to be quite a beautiful and, scenery wise, varied walk -helped by the fine weather of course.

Stack of Glencoul looking very fine in the zoomed distance.

Good track all the way with frequent gentle breeze and shimmering loch.

Image
Cnoc na Creige, a not to be underestimated viewpoint.

Image
I can only imagine what the view from Beinn Aird da Loch is like though there is a clue on the geograph.org.uk site.

Image
After half way we get a good view down to the end of Loch Glendhu and the crags behind the bothy.

Only really fit folk sweat lots!

View west to Quinag,

Interesting cliffs above the track.

Nice bothy.

Wondering if the walk up the bealach is easy.

Rockfall.

Also wondering about the way up there.

Determined trees.

I welcome the clouding of the sky for the return leg, to keep the sun off a bit.

My wife and I managed to do this walk a few years ago at Easter time. Truly magnificent scenery! The weather on that day was almost the same as yours, blue sunny skies for almost all of the way there and back. The most memorable thing about the walk, however, was being buzzed by a Hercules aeroplane as we sat down to eat a snack outside the Glendhu bothy travelling what seemed like just a few feet above us!

No Hercules for us, thankfully. It is a walk that exceeded expectations what with it really only being an out and back along a track but a lot of variety of views along the way and not another soul in sight.
I'd like to do a walk around the tops of the crags of Glendhu but that does look a lot easier said than done. Maybe a bit at a time or with a stay in the bothy to break up the walk. Easier for me when it gets cooler though.

So pre 1984?! Must have been a very quiet area back then.
I suppose it is still helped in its quietness by there being no big hills ahead (other than say Ben Leoid) and even if the whole of Scotland took to the highlands and islands (evenly distributed) that would still only be about one person per thousand horizontal feet so I guess it will always be quiet.

Yes a good bit earlier... In 1969. I first saw the new bridge and road when on Quinaig many years later. Beinn Leoid we got to.ftom the Ben Stack side.
I also recall having to camp close to the slipway having arrived too late for the ferry service. Simple quiet days when it was rare to see another person walking.
We were in to Fhionn Loch..... . Ordered out on account of stalking taking place, a route on Stack Polly then into Loch Dionard below crags on Foinaven for a camp then finished the holiday.based in Glen Brittle. Plus a few munros.

Not dissimilar to gaffr, we spent many summer and October holidays up here in the 70s. Can well remember the Kylesku ferry and listening to the stags roaring in the autumn on the other side of the loch. Going over the bridge for the first time in 1985 not long after it was built came as a bit of a shock but as bridges go I do like it. Thanks :)

I've only dipped my toe in the area but so far I like it a lot and, yes, it is a good bridge.

Stunning - this is one I’ve been meaning to do although after reading Mal Greys report I’d wanted to paddle. Looks like just as good a walk though 8)

Looking forward to going back there for a more extended walk when it is not too warm and not too cold. Not that I'm fussy!

Agreed, some very fine scenery and a surprising variety of it.
