Corse Hill

Following our weather related cut short weekend there was the option of going out somewhere on Sunday. We'd looked at the various Marilyns left to do nearby and come up with either Ben Bowie or Corse Hill. We opted for the latter - Ben Bowie has a reputation for being a soggy mess so all this weekend's rain will not have helped that situation. In the end it was an inspired choice as we were shielded from the wind until almost at the summit.

It was still chucking it down when I called round for Allison, but became drier on the road through to Eaglesham. Through the village and ending up at the quaintly named Carrot Moor - parked at the end of the road, where two other motors were also ignoring the no parking sign. Set off through a muddy field that avoids the gardens of the houses and leads into the trees. There are a number of helpful signposts with a choice of routes to Corse Hill - we went out the shorter and returned on the slightly longer one.

After a short time the grassy track becomes tarmac and the wind turbines can be heard then seen. We were sheltered from the wind in a coniferous corridor of calm - the fir trees were fair swishing around, but we were not. There was even some blue sky off to the west. Finally we came out of the trees into the windfarm proper, still signposts helping you reach the summit, which is marked by a trig column.

We returned part way by our outward route, then took the alternate footpath following a gushing stream. It became a bit of a swamp later on, near to where it rejoins the main track. Quite a nice wee walk all the same.

On the way home we had a drive along the sea front at Greenock & Gourock. Sea very high, and a small yacht had been washed up at Cardwell Bay. Never seen so many HM Coastguard in one place..

This one's on my to-do list this year. Probably take the alt route for some added interest! (P.S. Have stayed well clear of Cardwell but enjoyed seeing those photos - Greenock does have some advantages over Gourock )

Did this exact route in the summer with the kids and the return was swamp like in July too enjoyed it all the same

I'm not sure it counts if you didn't cycle there well done for getting out though - we spent the day doing DIY and driving ourselves crazy

Corse Hill is very near me [I can see a good bit of the windfarm from my house] and it isn't the most thrilling outing, but on a good day the views are quite nice - Ben Lomond is clearly visible - and it's very straightforward for even a non- hillwalker, so it's great for families with younger children.

You have to be careful in winter conditions though - the ice falls off the turbines....
