Now then, this was my fifth munro and by far the toughest day iv had yet - and not solely due to the walking!
Twas a fine summers day, we arrived at the carpark at Inverachil around 2:30pm. We intended to camp somewhere reasonably near to the base of slioch as we didnt expect to have time to make it back to the carpark before dark. So we set off around 3pm hauling half our body weight in bags on our backs, with little idea of the horrors our plan would provide us with. Ignorance isnt always bliss!
Arrived at the base of slioch around 4:30 and decided the only reasonable place to camp was this random patch of delighfully green looking grass not far from the path. This grass dry but the surrounding area.. bog. BIG MISTAKE. Anyway, off we went around 5pm. The walk up slioch was tough. We wanted to be back down before dark, which didnt leave much time for breaks. Views were.. well iv provided the pictures. I would have let my jaw hang loose if it wasnt for the fear of a gobful of midge.
By the time we made it down onto the final stretch back down towards the loch it was dark, and anybody that has tackled slioch will know that this is not a place to be in the dark! Trying to locate any sort of path with a torch in this terrain was about as much fun as a poke in the eye. We just followed the sound of the waterfall, stepping in all manner of boggy delights in the process. To top it off, we arrived back at the tent to find half the countries population of midges waiting for us. I have never, ever experienced such density of the remorseless little sods in my life, and im a highland man born and bred. Utterly fearsome. Lesser men would have fled for there mothers arms with tearful cheeks.
Anyway, enough rambling. Here are the piccies:

Obviously they must have thought that with a name like yours they could take you down a peg or two

Or maybe its just the area as I had a similar experience coming off Beinn Alligin one summer's evening. Anyway some nice evening pics there.

 Loch Maree has a fearsome rep for the midge and right now is the apex of midge season.

Was it the full on smoky coils of midge visible? Midge up the nose?

Nice pics from Slioch though 8)

Love the photo of 046 - is that a Corbett? I've forgotten its name. I can only imagine the midge hell you depicted. Gads.

As has so often happened in the past....identifying hills, even ones that have visited, is not exactly my forte. Assuming the loch to be loch Fada it might just be a couple of the Fisherfield group...the maidens summit?

046 is definitely A'Mhaighdean (centre) and Ruadh Stac Mor to right shrouded in cloud - terrific photo :D

Thanks to all for the kind words about the photos, stunning views from up there.

Kinley - The midges were mighty keen for it, you name the crevice they were there alright. Beak, lug, eye, arse.. The works. Savages. And of course not just the humble midge was present, the lovely cleg and deerfly also had a gander at my flesh.

Cracking report. Yes, I have often fallen off to sleep dreaming of climbing A' Mhaighdean. From everything I've heard and read, it is an awesome mountain, as picture 046 clearly shows. Love 017 as well - I recall the day I did Slioch with my wife, coming up into that fantastic ampitheatre of the coire and seeing the huge, rugged mass of Slioch proper across the expanse. There was also a large herd of deer in the coire that day, but somehow the grandeur of the place simply dwarfed them too. I have "fond" memories of the dog stealing my tuna mayo roll that day too.

Lovely photos - need to go back to Slioch on a good day sometime.

Setting off at 3pm reminds me of family holidays - we never seemed to get going before this sort of time. Always used to end up coming back to the car in the dark at 11pm! At least you had a tent.
