Charles Stuart climbed Sgurr Thuilm. Thomas Pennant climbed Beinn na Caillich near Broadford, but Samuel Johnson didn't.

“A savage series of mountains, discoloured black and red as if by the rage of fire.” (Black and Red Cuillin, seen from Beinn na Caillich, as described by Thomas Pennant)

Yes - three 18th century tours of the Highlands and Islands, done by very different personalities in very different circumstances. Charles’s tour was less relaxing! Pennant was a lover of nature and the outdoors: Johnson less so.

Over to you!

Prophetic, given the igneous origin of the Cuillin, and that the theory plutonism had only been proposed a few years before Pennant's Scottish tour, and that his tour pre-dated James Hutton's development of the igneous origin of certain rocks.

Thanks, Tim.

You have one element totally correct and one word of another element right. You are heading in the right direction in one respect but not in another.

Angus Hutchison was the last lighthouse keeper at Fair Isle South lighthouse station? (the last manned lighthouse in Scotland) and was at Sule Skerry before that?

Correct, he was the 4th generation of his family to be a keeper with the NLB and was the Principal Keeper at Fair Isle South when it was automated. Over to you Tim!

CharlesT gave it to me by suggesting the idea of lighthouses - I guessed Fair Isle South, and the rest of the credit belongs to Google. But thanks rohan - try this one...

According to MS, F wasn’t happy with his work in O

No guesses yet, so time for a clue. Again according to MS, we only know about what F did in O because of a series of letters sent by a Polar explorer.

No guesses yet, so here is another clue. It is probably pretty obvious that this is about a book.

The book was ranked in the top 10 by the Guardian in a list of the greatest novels ever written.

(I suppose that makes it easier to Google the answer - but just seeing if anyone wants to have a last go without Google)
