places to stay overnight near Arnisdale

Postby al78 » Sat Jun 27, 2020 11:41 pm

I have come up with the idea of a linear backpacking route starting in Fort William, going past Glenfinnan, Knoydart (Inverie), Kinloch Hourn, then heading west to Arnisdale to climb Beinn Sgritheall, from which there looks to be a fantastic view from the top. My question is, is there anywhere in or around Arnisdale where I could spend the night, likely camping as I don't think there are any B&Bs in or near Arnisdale. From Arnisdale, I would head north to Sheil Bridge.

I once camped at a picnic spot just north of Arnisdale before walking the two corbetts the following day. There's a wee space for parking then a picnic bench which can't be seen from the road and space to camp close by up on a wee rise off the road.

I think it's at about: NG83911045

An alternative idea, if intending to walk out to Shiel Bridge, would be to go directly across the Bealach Aoidhdailean (following the pylons) to Suardalen bothy and use that as a base for Beinn Sgritheall, rather than dropping down to Arnisdale.

You would find somewhere to wild-camp up Glen Arnisdale, by Achadh a'Ghlinne, also down the south coast path from Corran.
Also worth knowing that there are nice heated toilets with hot water at the Corran information centre at the road end, open 24hrs.
(There are also toilets with showers in Glenelg)

I can second that the Corran Information Centre at the road end is lovely! It is set up for stays of two nights maximum with an honesty box. There is a wee fenced off bit of grass behind the building which would easily take a small tent. We had a wee fire and toasted marshmallows after collecting driftwood on the rocky shoreline as well. Would guess in "season" it gets quite busy though and the visitors book confirms this (very popular with paddlers)...we went in February and had it to ourselves.

Thanks for all the replies, very helpful, a few options in there.

Is Achadh a'Ghlinne a bothy or a private building? I didn't realise the building maked on the OS map as Bealachasan was a bothy.

It's an estate shooting building, usually left unlocked.

Suardalen, not Bealachasan ;) But Suardalen is a good bothy.

(Bealachasan is a ruin)
