Absolutely correct. There is also a line going across the pavement here which I have walked over for years, but never walked out to see the pillar (marked on the OS maps) until lockdown had me walking more locally. It has been moved from its original position as the farmer was fed up with constantly having to avoid it and is now in the back garden of a farm cottage.Once mariners had a more accurate way of navigating they could complete their journeys faster with a quicker turn round...hence the more money.

By all accounts James Gregory deserves to be better known. Overshadowed by Issac Newton, but a man of great intellect.

Now, TL relied on water for his success, in more ways than one.

Tom Leonard Poet, featured in "Roots and Water"

If not it could be Thomas Lauder, chair of the Herring Fisheries Board in the nineteenth century

But I somehow think it is neither of these.

Is it Thomas Lipton, made his pile from tea and spent a lot of it trying to win the America's Cup. He never did win it but got a special trophy for his efforts.

Correct. Five unsuccessful attempts I believe. A bottomless pocket courtesy of tea and groceries. Your go.

Thanks!

Extra clue: In E, RH said he was called AH He had worked with another AH, although at times it had been a struggle.
