Absolutely correct. There is also a line going across the pavement here which I have walked over for years, but never walked out to see the pillar (marked on the OS maps) until lockdown had me walking more locally. It has been moved from its original position as the farmer was fed up with constantly having to avoid it and is now in the back garden of a farm cottage.Once mariners had a more accurate way of navigating they could complete their journeys faster with a quicker turn round...hence the more money.
