Yes - that’s the distinctive outline of Ben Nevis!

It looks like Ben Nevis, but assuming the Fyish monument is on a modest size hill near Alness, how on earth did you get such a distinct photo of it. I tried to see if I could make out Ben Nevis from the monument on Google Earth and Ben Nevis is literally a speck on the horizon. I'd be very surprised to see it that distinctive from that distance in real conditions, unless you had crystal clear blue skies and an Arctic airmass in winter. It is over 70 miles as the crow files, which is about the distance to the horizon from an observation height of 1200m.

Definitely the Ben.

70 mile visibility is not unusual, even in the summer. Beinn a' Ghlo is often visible from the modest summit of Blackford Hill in Edinburgh (as it was today), which is a similar distance away.

Check with this panorama site

I had a quick look and the Ben does not seem to appear, but could it be be Maoile Lundaidh ?

Yes it is Ben Nevis, 67 miles on a bearing of 204 degrees (should you want to check next time you see it from there). It's not uncommon given the right conditions. It's particularly striking in winter when we have a high pressure system dominating, allowing the Ben and the Grey Corries to stand out against the early evening sky.
Not quite so far - 54 miles - the Bin of Cullen along the Moray coast is usually prominent, along with Ben Rinnes inland, then a clear sweep round to Ben Avon and on to the Northern Corries (48 miles).
Unfortunately the vast bulk of Wyvis and its satellite hills preclude any expansive view west, though the Strathfarrar ridge looks very fine from Fyrish.

Was chatting with another walker on the top of Carn an Righ yesterday. We were marvelling at how clear it was for July, none of the usual haze. Perhaps the fact that it felt like March in the wind wasn't, therefore, surprising.

Could see Ben Tee clearly from the top of Lochnagar yesterday. Could also see the snow on Ben Nevis which is a bit further - around 65 miles according to the viewfinder on the summit.
Ben Tee - the pointy far away hill in the middle, I think?

And if you know where to look Ben Cruachan is visible from Braid Hill(so I suspect Blackford hill too).

From Blackford Hill, Cruachan is just hidden by some of the Trossachs hills. There is also a similar length (133km) line of sight from the Braids to Braeriach and Cairn Toul. If I look carefully at a shot I took in April while there was still snow on the higher hills, there are a few white pixels in the right place!

It is amazing how much you can see once both points are at even a relatively small height - St Kilda from about 50m up on North Uist was another one that seemed mathematically improbable but very real on the ground.

My top tip on this subject is when photographing what is a possible long line of site is to take a few non digital zooms on your camera and apply some post process contrast adjustments. You’ll be amazed at what can appear out of the haze at times.

I live local to Fyrish, and I too have seen Ben Nevis from there.
