On April 1st. (purely by coincidence) R (husband) and I decided that we had walked all the walkable routes within a 5 mile radius of our house many times, and we could extend our range by getting out the bikes. This may have been a mistake as we hadn't been on them for four years when we had used them to cycle towards Tahaval. The tires had perished and as far as we could see no bike shops were open, but my sister searched online and found that the one just round the corner WAS open with limited hours. They refurbished them and we went for an introductory spin along the cycle track. Alas, cycling back R somehow managed to hit a bollard.

It was obvious that was the end of that particular road. An American couple helped him and his bike into the car after sitting with him while I fetched it. Then we whizzed off to A & E and because everyone else was avoiding it because of Covid 19, his hip and arm got mended very quickly. After three days he was discharged to our local hospital, and after another three days was joined by "coughing man", so all in all after having acquired Covid19, it was the end of April until he was discharged.

Don't try getting a double bed down to the ground floor in the middle of a pandemic when nobody is allowed to come in and help. I decided to tackle it myself and got blocked up the stairs behind the mattress that had its own ideas as to how to descend. I couldn't get past either side or tunnel under, so ended up phoning the police, who not only rescued me, but kindly did the whole job for me.

It wasn't until a couple of months later that R felt able to climb anything at all. Below, Drumcarrow Craig 0.66 miles and 95 feet. June 30th 2020. The hardest bit was getting under the electric fence, as it was difficult standing up again.

Below, Norman's Law from the high car park 1.2 miles 430 feet July 7th 2020. We forgot the camera, but a kind lady emailed this to us from her phone.

Below Mount Hill 2 miles and 505 feet July 12th (I can't wait for the hair-dressing appointment. You would think that someone who had been with her for 38 years would get to the front of the queue, but alas, it is the people who threaten to go elsewhere).

Below East Lomond 0.9 miles 289 feet July 14th (80th birthday)

We are hoping rehab continues, but doubt if we are going to be able to crack on with our remaining Wainwrights in the near future.

Glad to see that R is up and about after such a rotten sequence of events.

I'm so glad R's getting out and about again. What a tale about the mattress and the stairs - I remember seeing a post of your stairs on here - not something to be taking a double mattress down on your own

It was worse than that. Far previous owners built an extension containing kitchen and room above with very narrow steep stairs completely enclosed (our guest bedroom). I would have given myself a chance of climbing over the banister and down the other side of the main stairs if the mattress had stuck on them (grandchildren used to do it frequently), but not with the one where I got stuck. Police thought it hilarious that an 81 year old should be going in for furniture removal and when I said my next job was to get the climbing rope and lower the base down in 2 halves said "NO IT ISN'T" and heaved the base down themselves. They were so nice. Everyone else was furious with me except for a walking friend whose past illnesses have made it hard for him to put one leg in front of the other without falling down the hill he is climbing and has had more cracked ribs and black eyes than I care to count..

Sorry to hear you've had such a challenging time over lockdown with broken bones and hospital acquired covid. :?

But reassuring you've tackled it in your usual indomitable style and with such a positive outcome. You're truly an inspiraton!

You missed the chance for the monthly best report prize when you did "Up my stairs" and "Down my stairs"............put in one for "Down my stairs wie a mattress an a polisman" and give us a much needed laugh.....

So good to see R is up the hills again - small doesn't matter, they're all hills, all have their appeal, all build strength and fitness.

Good to see you both up and about. Did you explain to the police your predicament on the phone before they arrived? Bet that story did the rounds in the station for a while. Did the two Lomond Hills a couple of weeks ago as part of my own rehab from sciatica so know it's no mean feat to get to East Lomond summit after R's woes. Well done to both of you😊!!

One of them was a poliswoman, who was glad to note that I had blocked myself into the room containing the remains of my hoard, so I had toilet paper, instant coffee and a bag of apples to eat up there while I waited for them. I think I could have managed the bed down the stairs in former days when I still had 2nd-hand booksellers biceps from hauling books down slingsby attic ladders at double speed as their owners would keep trying to help while their wives kept saying "Darling...the doctor said." But it is now 14 years since I did that stuff and muscles have withered.

29 July 2020 Benarty 2.2. miles 551 feet. Don't think we are going out in the next 2 days, so this is the end of July's rehab (and the end of this story...can't go on posting everything).

Some interesting additional twists to the story that I wasn’t previously aware of there - sounds like the pair of you have had quite a time of it!

Glad to see things are slowly improving though. Must be frustrating for R - I can certainly see the same in Jackie when she thinks about the sort of places we were hoping to be able to manage to reach this summer.

Just as well then that you are sort of, definitely not, maybe collecting Marilyns then. Hope Jackie gets back to full fitness soon. Her half fitness is still pretty impressive. I sympathis:, going at less than your optimal rate is not that much fun, but better than not getting out together at all.
