Carn a'Chlamain - Car Park

Carn a'Chlamain - Car Park

Postby goral85 » Mon Jul 27, 2020 2:18 pm

Hi Friends!

I was wondering if anyone could give me an insight into how busy the Bridge of Tilt car park is on the weekends these days?
Couple of weeks ago I've done Mayar and Dreish, my first Munros (yaay), and as much as I did not mind walking the 10km then from the Glen Clova hotel, here in Glen Tilt there seems to be no alternative car park and I'd rather not drive there for two hours just to turn round and drive back home due to lack of parking spaces.

Thank you in advance!

Hello! We parked at the Bridge of Tilt car park yesterday, arriving about 9am. It was busy but there were spaces.

Great, thanks. I was planning to arrive there between 8 and 9 and I think I'll stick to it. If only I had a bike, already dreading the 5m walk back

Hi Louise!
Thank you. Where did you check the shooting range schedule before setting off? I can't find it on the Estate's website.

The range schedule is here: http://www.westatholl.org.uk/WARC2020Calendar.pdf
If the range is operational, you can always take the alternative route that crosses the river and crosses back at Gilbert's Bridge - this is worthwhile in one or other direction for some variety in any case. You can also make a loop on the hill section by returning to the Ach-mhairc bridge over Braigh nan Creagan Bhreac and Cuirn Mharanaich (pathless but not difficult going).

Hey, I parked there on Saturday 18th. Was about half full when I arrived at 7.30am. You should get a space if you arrive before 9 but when I got back to the carpark the whole place was rammed, was a struggle getting out with the way some people parked even along the road. Just get there early enough and it'll be no problem.

I'd also recommend if you're feeling fit to do the corbett Beinn Mheadhonach aswell as Carn a'Chlamain, adds about an extra 1.5-2 hours and roughly 3 miles extra. It's a long but manageable day.

Yes but not by much. If you are walking it rather than biking there is a nice path through the trees on the eastern bank of the Tilt which avoids much of the road walking.

Yeah, that path from car park to the village is actually a relief after the miles of sealed roads previously. Glen Tilt's lovely, but it could do with being a bit shorter, I always feel.

The normal route stays well away from the firing range, highlighted in blue.

Was up there last week. Would recommend carrying on to just past Forest Lodge and taking the stalker's path up to create a nice circuit of the hill. The path zigzags nicely so never gets steep and the traverse across the top plateau is more pleasant than the standard ridge route. Further up the glen admittedly but you save some distance on the hill. This path is accessed by turning left at the end of the trees past the lodge, going through the gate and traversing up to the left until you hit a stile. From there the path is clear to the summit.

I cycled up from the main car park in BA. Taking the longer road route distance to Tilt CP was 0.8miles, then distance to bottom of ridge route was 5.9 miles and distance to FL was 8.3 miles.

You've just described the standard route, the track up the ridge is a much more recent addition by the estate (good to mountain bike on mind you)
