Beinn Dhorain in lonely Glen Loth

We had parked overnight in Glen Loth at the foot of the short direct ascent to Beinn Dhorain. Glen Loth is a really desolate place, though ideal for people wanting a peaceful remote camping spot, but we did wonder how many people ever go there. Apparently it had only been recently tarmacked when Dempster wrote his book, but now it has lots of grass growing down the middle. Since we had plenty of time, we decided to follow the route in the SMC guide, walking up the long gentle slopes from the south. So we started off by walking down the road, away from the hill! We found the track, and went through gaps in the fence rather than climbing the locked gate. We followed the track uphill.

We headed over Druim Dearg - first view of Morven, then across to Beinn Dhorain - better views of Morven and Scaraben.

Finally we headed for the trig point on Ben Uarie and had our lunch. The views were better here northwards.

We headed back to the col, descended through the heathery valley between the two hills, and aimed for our van, where there was a stile over the fence. We discovered who goes along Glen Loth - another hillwalker, a few cyclists, a few tourists driving slowly, and a local driving faster.

I too enjoyed the visit to Glenloth for Dhorain and you just have to get further North to reach Morven when seen from there.
Pleasant approach up the Glen to Braemore and Berriedale Water.

Great views from that hill and an exciting drive! Especially where you first come off the a9.

We did the quick out and back from the high point as a leg stretcher recently.

We blocked part of the A9 for a short while because a large van was coming out of Glen Loth when we (with our large van) were trying to go up!

Yes, Morven wasn't quite high enough on the agenda this trip, but it is getting nearer the top of the wishlist now.

Great hill. I go past Helmsdale a couple of times a year and sometimes take the "short"cut through Glen Loth, but it is gradually turning into a 4x4 track.
