Deer stalking.

Deer stalking.

Postby TAFKAOD » Sat Aug 29, 2020 10:20 am

Hi all.

Obviously we are into stalking season. I’ve been in touch with one estate to enquire about walking and was asked to stay off the estate for the entirety of September and October. I was under the impression this estate never shot on a Sunday, but thought I’d enquire anyway.

I’ve just returned to hiking late last year. Wondered what the actual rules were on stalking time. I’m guessing there are a lot of estates who would happy not see us for 2 months...

That doesn't seem reasonable.

I've found most estates are reasonable.
Which estate is it?

As others have said completely unreasonable and counterproductive.

As someone who would happily see "Mugabe style land grabs" I'm always more than happy to be accommodating in setting aside my rights to allow land owners have their sport.

Stuff like this makes that less likely.

Happily I think most of us could name a half dozen estates and come up with who this was.

You still have the legal right to roam, however it is advised that you avoid areas where shooting is taking place, both for your own safety and to avoid disturbing the deer (or game birds) being stalked.
Most stalking takes place in coires, so sticking to ridges and (where applicable) main paths is advisable. The majority of estates are cooperative and will be helpful if you ask about stalking. They also sometimes put signs up, which can be helpful.
Please bear in mind that stalking is weather dependent and so plans are liable to change at short notice, depending on visibility and wind direction.

Aye North Chesthill Estate, that is certainly one that springs to mind.

However what a contrast further up Glen Lyon. I popped up Cam Chreag yesterday. A Spacious and very nice car park, complete with clean and tidy toilets, has been povided curtesy of The Meggernie Estate. Wow!
