Quickest way to High Willhays

The most interesting routes to the highest point in southern England are probably from the east or the west, but a decent, short walk can be had, starting near Okehampton camp.

I got to the end of the public road by the camp and carried on, taking a right turn at the cattle grid onto the moor. You can go as far as Rowtor by car on tarmac, but I parked up after a couple of hundred yards and set off up the road.

The road turns into a rough track after the parking spot by Rowtor, splashing through a ford and then up to a point between High Willhays and Yes Tor.

It's an easy walk over to High Willhays and the ciarn that marks the high point. The views of the moor from here are excellent and better still from the small tor just to the south.

I headed over to Yes Tor in the late afternoon sunshine, clambering up on to the top, stiopping at the trig point for tea and a biscuit before heading down, cutting across West Mill Tor for a little added interest.

Was there a couple or three years ago and it's fine walking ground with great views and plenty of rocky outcrops for interest.
