Garmin 64sx - Maps Help Needed

Garmin 64sx - Maps Help Needed

Postby Dom_89 » Thu Oct 22, 2020 3:51 pm

I have just purchased a 2nd hand Garmin 64sx but it doesn't have any OS Maps loaded on it.

I'm looking for a bit of advice as to the best maps to get for it and where to get them.

I have had a quick google search but not sure what to be looking for

There are several choices...

- You can pay a 3-figure sum to Garmin
- You may find an old one cheap on eBay
- There are other maps based on Open Street Map from TalkyToaster and http://garmin.openstreetmap.nl/
- There is a map based on OS OpenData - search for GBOPEN MAP

you get them on ebay, I suspect they're copies though but do the job at a fraction of the cost

As was said above, Talky Toaster. He was so helpful and understanding (I’m not the most tech savvy), and very reasonably priced. I honestly cannot give the guy anything other than genuine praise and gratitude.

I gave Martin a call and he pointed me in the right direction- seems like a reasonably priced alternative!

How do the talky toaster differ to the more expensive equivalents? Is there much content missing?

The subscription service looks like really good value for money.

Talkytoaster makes maps from Open Street Map data. Open Street Map is a 'crowdsourced' project where thousands of people contribute data about roads, paths, streams, forests etc. In most popular areas it is up to date and comprehensive with more data (shops, points of interest) than other maps. But there are less popular areas where many items are missing. This is especially true of smaller features such as copses and brooks. The Ordnance Survey cover the whole country to a great level of detail and much of the is reflected in their free OpenData too.

It is not relevant to Scotland, but OpenStreetMap does not usually record Public Rights of Way as such.

TalkyToaster is OSM plus NASA topological data, that's what makes it interesting for hiking.

This is the out-o-date OS Map data (1:25, 1:50, 1:250) for Garmin, £40.

I have both loaded on my device. Nice to have the option to switch between them.

Another vote for Talky Toaster

Bought micro SD £16 for my garmin etrex, very good loads of detail, shows established paths as well, super easy just put card in, excellent for the money , the talky toaster maps show on base camp too when unit plugged into comp.
