Fisherfield 6 - snow on summits?

Fisherfield 6 - snow on summits?

Postby errisbogtrotter » Thu Oct 22, 2020 6:16 pm

Hi all. Looking to do fisherfield 6 in next couple of weeks possibly. Ive been keeping an eye on MWIS forecasts for NW Highlands, lots of rain but also snow showers above 700m. I was wondering has anyone been up fisherfield munros very recently and interested to know if much snow on tops or just some residual. main question....are crampons and ice axe essential for fisherfield from now on through winter?? thanks.

Saw the top of An Teallach briefly today - no snow at all. Freezing levels are not forecast to drop much below 1000m in the next week, so significant accumulations seem unlikely for now.

Hi,
I am in Laide now and can tell you that there is no snow currently on the tops. I can see An Teallach and Beinn a Chlaidheimh from my house and they are clear now. I went to Gairloch today and could see A'Mhaighdean which was also clear. However, it has rained quite heavily over the past few days, although the temperature has not been particularly cold.
Hope this helps

Sure thing. As it stands you are more likely to have problems with wet ground or river crossings but, as I am sure you are aware, anything can happen. A week is a long time in Highland weather.
Good luck

I met someone carrying an ice axe on the Ochils today - not quite sure why...

I suppose the person was wanting to be prepared for all weathers and conditions? Better to have it if you need it arguably?

Well mwis did mention snow above 700m for the SE Highlands (which includes the Ochils in mwis terms) last night - but Ben Cleuch where the chap was is only 721m! I also met someone up there with an axe on a properly warm day in August.

aye, maybe the guy with the axe in august was over zealous but from now going forward you can understand it. more importantly, what were the river levels like?

The only burn I crossed was via a bridge - nothing startling with the level there. Main issue was squelchy ground (and the bridge was very skiddy). Just normal mid-Oct conditions really.

Maybe just getting some training in with the heavier pack for the months ahead.

Me and my pal took ice axes up to Ossians cave on a real hot day at the end of May

Snow isn't usually a big issue late Oct early Nov. The odd dusting perhaps. Day light and river crossings probably bigger factors for Fisherfield this time of year.

Keep an on the forecast (MWIS) on the run up to your trip.

Hi,
Still no snow here, and unlikely to be any, but there has been a lot of rain. A lot! The rivers may well be a problem, especially if you come in from the Corrie Hallie direction.
Kinlochewe may be better.
