Can I have a "P" please Bob - Scotland (2nd edition)

Definitely HMHT's, he did the hard bit. I'd be like one of those footballers that slides in on the goalline to nick one off a teammate.

Thanks LobeyD and Glengavel!

Was JA the basis for HB and especially DB?

I once went on a pub crawl round Fort William with a Broons illustrator.

Not Hen and Joe. But, DB is an iconic Scottish character.

Whereas JA was not Scottish at all.

Was James Annesly the basis for Henry Bertram (Guy Mannering) and David Balfour (Kidnapped)?

Matthew Forster Heddle, physician, mountaineer and amateur geologist. Haven't been able to pin down the L yet.

Ok, I'll give it you. Heddle had a LIST of mountains which he handed on to Hugh Munro when he was tasked with finding out how many there were. Heddle had been everywhere, and climbed everything, and his list was supposed to have been very useful to Munro in the compilation of HIS list, and part of the reason Munro got it done so speedily. However, Heddle's list does not seem to have survived. We hoped that when we moved into this house once owned by his eccentric daughter Katy, it might be stuffed away behind a rafter, but no luck. If Heddle hadn't been so busy with his "Mineralogy of Scotland" it could have been the Heddles we climbed now, and not the Munros.

Thank you. I had never heard of him, which given his achievements I maybe should have. Nowhere in the pieces I have read on Munro is he mentioned either. I will now apply myself to finding a comparably obscure poser.
