Beinn Mhanach - access

Beinn Mhanach - access

Postby Lordy » Fri Apr 30, 2021 12:11 pm

Afternoon all,

I was considering ticking off Beinn Mhanach soon, but note that the usual starting point for vehicular access is the A82 at Auch. With this section of the A82 now being an official clearway, does anybody know of an alternative approach/place to leave the car? Short of parking in Tyndrum and hiking a part of the WHW I'm not sure on any alternatives.

Thanks in advance,

Lordy

There's a big parking area available at 329330 (county boundary) to the South. 2km along WH Way to the start of the glen.

From Glen Lyon. More interesting and no parking issues.

Good point - does this mean that "unofficial" laybys on this section of the A82 are now out of bounds?

Achallader is another possible start point: useful if the rivers are in spate. Can combine Mhanach with Achaladair for a more interesting day out.

Have done both approaches, from "Normal A82" and Achallader and had a far better day of it from the latter approach, but didn't actually climb Achallader.

Agreed, although it appears Lordy already has the Achaladair 2 ticked off. It is still a feasible route for Mhanach though, through the bealach south of Beinn Achaladair. This does involve further descent and re-ascent, but like JMB says, dodges the river crossing. Reaching the aforementioned bealach opens up some interesting views if the weather is clear. Sgurr would seem to endorse that too.

The Achallader approach will negate losing your wing mirror. You could also park just south of it at the Loch Lomond NP sign and due west of Beinn Odhar. Pick up the West Highland Way and then the path to Beinn Mhanach.

I remember tucking my wing mirror at a tight parking spot in the Southern Uplands for the Culter Fell round. I didn't realise I'd forgotten to untuck it until wanting to change lanes at 70mph on the A74M
Lordy, I now realise you might have already done part of the Achallader route when doing the Achaladair 2. In which case my previous description of the route to the bealach may be superfluous.

Our route has been updated to start from the park boundary. I really like the approach walk along the Auch Glen!
