deer flies - keds

Gill - that does sound very unpleasant ! Thinking back, I've had various times when I've been annoyed by keds but I've never known them to bite me. Had a look on Google which suggests it's unusual but they may bite humans on rare occasions.

Need to get some anti histamines I think..I read it takes a day or two for the bites/lumps to appear...they are still appearing lol I must have been smelling like a big old red deer lol .. I don't react to other bites so this is very unusual for me and the keds were the only bug of any volume. Even the campsite midgies weren't this bad lol

Though annoying as they are so hard to flick off, they've never bitten me as far as I know. Hope yours get better soon.

Yes was pestered by them in glen Sheil , and yes I was still pulling them out my hair and off my ears in the car 30mins down the road ?!
And they don't die easily too, I was squeezing one really hard and it was still alive ?
I've seen them before but not in these numbers , you couldn't stop them landing on you , and when they did they looked like wee spiders crawling on you 😳
They are also called Louse Flies , and they will bite but humans aren't their usually target ..

They were ridiculous on the Glenfinnan munros over the weekend, though weirdly only from about 400m to summit level. I'd got back to the campsite, had a shower and was still finding them on me hours later, having shed their wings

We hiked Gulvain yesterday and the keds were relentless. This is the first time we’ve come across them. We thankfully didn’t get bitten but hundreds landed on us!

I've seen a few keds in the last couple of years, didn't know what they were at first. They never seemed to bite despite being good at hanging on, until this week when I found an itchy bite mark after getting rid of several of the wee biters. I can't be sure it was them, but the timing fits. These ones were hanging around in the woods near sea level.

Did Rois-bheinn yesterday (in clag, thanks MWIS ) and the keds were constant. Is it normal for them to go for the neck or did I get some kind of vampire ked?

I think they go for the hairline or top of your clothing, t shirt etc. They were the same on Arran on Wednesday, they're persistent buggers, not the easiest to swat away.

Plagued with them up the Bidean and Stob Coire Sgreamhach last week. Never seen anything like it. No bites, but as others have said, absolute pests of hell to avoid/ remove.
