My usual view of merlins is when they fly past going somewhere else fast, but in the Pentlands today I came across this one, not sure if it was injured or a young bird but it was not in a hurry to go:

first view was in long grass (I had camera in B&W mode)

then it flew onto the path

then flew off to the side of the hill when a cyclist approached from the other direction and I just got an out-of focus silhouette
