I have just went for my first walk on a Munro(Lochnagar), we reached the first cairn but had to turn back as the weather got worse, would this still be classed as bagged.

hello mickie,welcome to the forum,, you cant class the hill as bagged unless you get right to the top. so now you have the perfect excuse to go back when the weather is better and do it again, be warned though, this hillwalking/climbing lark can be addictive

Ok fair enough will have to take a pic to prove it when I return we are already planning our second attempt at a Munro Ben Macdui so hope the weather is better.

You could always join the curmudgeonly ranks of the Munro Non-Baggers,a contrary bunch who clamber to nearly the top of the hill, then turn back a few yards from the summit, just to annoy the more pedantic baggers. I myself have non-bagged the summits of Ben MacDhui, Derry Cairngorm and Cairn A'Mhaim all in one day.

There are no rules, so if your happy to count it as bagged it’s bagged.

Big day, and given the shape of those hills, getting within a few tens of meters would put your head over their tops - and from a non-bagger perspective that's got to be questionable!

My boss enjoys hillwalking, but has never topped a munro, or even got close - he walks out with his wife until he finds a view, then sits and waits for her to return - THAT'S non-bagging at it's purest (but then he's a golfer...).

I can see there are different views (if you pardon the pun) on bagged, the person leading us did say we were over 3000ft so we could say its bagged.

...WOW, radical! I can sort of see the point when the top is rated close to 3000, but not for me.

Usually accepted "topping" is with a touch of the cairn, and a possibly a photo.

Just think, with the "over 3000ft" criteria you could "bag" most of the Cairngorms with almost no effort at all - a short stroll from the top car park, declare which summit you were really going for, "I was going to do the whole North round, is that five or six?" and add the ticks...

Ah well, no one will know, but I feel that standing on top and looking all around is so very different to pausing on ascent and looking up, that I want to get to the top, or accept that it was just a walk in the hills (and I've had a fair few of those!).
