Ben Gulabin

Starting from.

Parking space 1.5km north of the Spittal of glenshee

This was basically a scouting trip, fine time to check the roads and the snow conditions under foot. The Corbett of choice was Ben Gulabin.

Being situated near the road made this a good hill for the day. A quick up and down, relatively low ascent and short distance made this a good choice. Also if the conditions were better than anticipated we could go for the circular route around Coire Shith.

We were parked up and ready later than planned, we started walking at 11.30. Conditions were good. With little wind, and the sun trying its best to make an appearance we decided on the bigger route.

We headed up the track for a bit then made a beeline for Creagan Bheithe 759m then we carried on north to Carn Mor 876m from here we carried on around the rim of Coire Shith passing the 788m spot height then on to the final top at 747m. Here we were greeted with a nice tall slim cairn that was over 6’ in height. Nice views were had of Ben Gulabin, our final climb of the day.

perfect timing. just before dark gets a hold.

We dropped down SSE…. Bum slides most of the way then headed up via the north side onto the summit to be met with a rather disappointing cairn. From the Cairn we carried on to the SE then finally dropped off to the east back to the car.
What a great Hogmanay, no drink and plenty exercise thrown in. As for the scouting exercise well that was a big plus.

:D Our new years day trip was definitely on. :D

Nice photos - didn't get a view from this one, and all the subsequent reports I've seen were also in the cloud. Have always fancied visiting Carn a Gheoidh from this direction. Nice little loop you added on to extend the walk :)

Jealous - more sun than we've seen in 7 days walking in the W and NW highlands :(

Looks a great day :)

Excellent report Dave.....
Love the shot looking down into Glen Taitneach. I walked up Glen Taitneach in the summer and it looked fantastic so I bet it looks great now with the snow all around. Love the 6ft cairn :D Nice detour to do Ben Gulabin :D

Nice report. The Snow looks pretty scant which is surprising for the East. Went up Creise & Meall a Bhuiridh on the 1st and couldn't believe how high up the snow line was.

Nice route Dave - certainly better than the swift up and down I did in July, but then I was on a tight timescale. The early pics look very like the conditions I had on Creag Leacach and Glas Maol the previous day. The light of the sky in the Glen Taitmeach shot is stunning. :D
