Saw our first adder today in Glen Tanar. It was dead. Either killed by a bird, or by the sight of us approaching.

Maybe a dumb question, but what is the likelyhood of an adder crawling into your tent ?
Can't imagine my horror of waking up, opening up the inner tent to find one ......

They have trouble with the zips. :D
But seriously, i don't know.

Adders are one of those things i'm itching to see. I need to get better at early rises and keep my eyes peeled i think.

LOL - I aready figured out the zip would be a problem for them, but I appreciate the humour !

I'm really curious though if it is a realistic possibility....

When I worked in a military hospital in Saudi Arabia, many years ago, we used to go on camping trips out to the desert for the weekend. I bought a toy rubber snake from a kids' toy store and cut off the obvious rubber tongue, sprayed the snake with matt sand-colour paint and in the drunken evening, slipped it into a mate's sleeping bag. Oh, the shrieks, the howling, the Kerfuffle ! Laugh? I nearly soiled my desert camouflage ...

That would have made a great trip report. Any pictures?

Always see them on the Waskerley Way (part of C2C cycle route), County Durham, in the early Spring when they like laying on the cycle path in the sun.....have to make sure where your wheel is going!!:) Also used to see them on Exmoor near Dunkery Beacon. We're off to Skye start of October, are they likely to be around then as I'm scared stiff of snakes?

Agreed - I lived there for a year and a half - sweeping generalisations and cliched tarring-all-with-the-same-brush don't happen for nothing.

No, they've probably drowned by now, I was in Skye yesterday and winter has well and truly arrived. The waterfalls are very impressive though.

I wonder if we'll see the sea freeze over again around Skye this winter like it did the last one?

Seen and *ahem* touched one on the WHW last year about half a mile before Beinglas campsite. There was a group of 4 of us, 2 girls were 100 meters or so ahead of us and then my mate passed it before me. Not a single one spotted it, then muggins here seen it from about a foot away as I was about to stand on it. it was about a foot long and twice as thick as a pencil. seeing as it hadn't moved (and I knew hee haw about snakes) I thought it was dead. wasn't until I called my mate back and we both discussed about it, I toe tapped it, for it to wriggle off into the underbrush at some speed and leaving me needing a kit change. Naturally you research these things afterwards and discover it was sunning it's self on the stones :)

Obviously by the time we sat around a meal in Bein Glas after pitching the tents and having a shower, the story had evolved from a toe tap and a kit change to it attacked me and got booted to it's senses. Alcohol may have been involved.

*no snakes were hurt during this event*
