The plan for this walk was to follow the WH route up on to Beinn Bhuella then cut across onto Cruach nam Miseag , one I had wanted to climb for a while , it stands out when driving north up the Gareloch as a lumpy mass in the distance , an odd looking hill. I parked up below lettermay at a large lochside layby and headed up into the forest . The route is easy to follow as long as long as you remember that the OS map is out of date , there is a new forestry road leading down to the bridge ,making life easy . The ascent beside the waterfall is easy (and waymarked ) , the route then heads up into the crags to the summit .
- Into the forest
- Once across the bridge turn left at white post to enter firebreak leading to the waterfall
- Route up beside waterfall
- View across to Cruach nam Miseag
- Looking up into crags and mist
- Route up
- View back down gully to Curra Lochain
- Lochan na Cnaimh from near summit
- A dreich trig point
- Looking down the Gareloch past Rhu to the Clyde
Heading south from the summit ,Caisteal Dubh , brings you to to Ceann Garbh and below its crags lie the remains of the Grumman Martlet which crashed in 1940 ,killing the pilot, Lt Russell. The wreckage is widely scattered but still recognisable.
- Engine -Pratt and Whitney Wasp
- Wingtip with Fleet Air Arm roundel
- Rear of cockpit with armour plating
- Aft fuselage and tailwheel mounting
Leaving this sad place I headed NE to skirt the northern edge of the loch before starting the climb up Cruach nam Miseag. This is a great wee hill ,full of twists and turns and rocky knolls ,with fine views south to the Clyde .
- Route down to loch and up Cruach
- Rock-face
- View down Loch Goil
From the summit I headed NW across ground full of dips and rises before meeting a burn ,following this beside a gully to meet the edge of the forestry . A section of this has been clear felled, allowing access down to the forest road below ,which heads back north to the start of the walk and lovely Lochgoilhead.
- route back down to forest
A great day out
