The ascent of Cairnsmore of Carsphairn can be an easy to navigate route making it an ideal candidate for introducing someone to winter walking. It's possible to do the whole thing, less a few hundred metres towards the summit itself, either following a landrover track, stane dyke wall or fencing. The route description from pgrizz is excellent and doesn't need expanding on. We traversed it in the opposite direction from him. We found ourselves being blown up the steep final section towards the summit cairn. Either direction with a prevailing wind should see any squalls at your back going uphill. The views from the summit are fantastic and it's not too boggy a walk compared to some others in Galloway.
Have included this entry to give those preparing for it a suggested mapped route as well.
