Lundie Craigs circuit, Sidlaws

Summary

Lundie Craig is a prominent summit in the Sidlaw Hills, with a steep escarpment and a transmitter mast that make it easily identifiable when seen from afar. It is a great viewpoint and the ascent is very straightforward; the rougher descent given here could be omitted.

Stage 1

There is a car park on the west side of the A923 at NO263359, opposite a track that is signed for Ledcrieff Fisheries and Tullbaccart Farm. After carefully crossing the road, the walk begins along this track (there is also a footpath sign for Crags of Lundie). Head along the track, passing to the right of the farm buildings.

Stage 2

The track then curves left and climbs, passing through a gate. When it forks, keep on the main, lower track. The track then curves right (as another track joins in from the left) and gives some excellent views out over Strathmore. At the next junction - as the grassy dam of Ledcrieff Loch draws near - turn left through a gate.

Stage 3

The track curves round to the left and then to the right, continuing for almost 2km through an area felled and replanted in recent years. Just after the track swings back left once again, turn sharp right at the wooden signpost onto an ascending track. This soon climbs clear of the trees, passing through a gate to reach open moorland and approaches a transmitter mast.

Stage 4

Before reaching the mast turn left onto a path which climbs up to reach the summit trig point. This is a superb viewpoint, with Dundee backed by the Tay Estuary, whilst over Strathmore are the foothills of the Angus Glens, rising up into the summits of the Highlands. Looking along the Sidlaws to the east, the masts on Craigowl are prominent, with the stone tower on Kinpurney Hill nearer to the left.

Stage 5

The easiest descent route is to retrace your steps. There is however a rougher, wetter alternative, which requires a little more navigation but makes for an enjoyable circuit. To go this way, cut down to the edge of the escarpment and then follow it to the left (east); there is a rough path. The escarpment soon curves round to the north, giving excellent views over Long Loch. After briefly descending, a grassy path cuts off sharply to the right, descending across the slope; once on it the path is easy to follow.

Stage 6

When the top corner of a fence is reached, the path contours to the right, running along the foot of the steep slopes which sweep down from Lundie Craig. Pass through a gate in a fence and continue along a little glen beneath the crags, following a line of telegraph poles for a time. The path keeps to the left side of the glen to avoid the boggiest ground, but is still wet in places. There are good views back up to Lundie Craigs.

Stage 7

When the edge of the forestry is reached go through the gate ahead. The path then joins a track along the south side of Ledcrieffe Loch, which is popular with fisherman. There is a small burn to cross near the far end of the loch before the track rejoins the outward route. Keep ahead here, remembering to fork left on the main track further on to retrace your steps back to the start of the walk.
