Wild West Rhinog Loop
Hewitts: Diffwys, Rhinog Fach, Rhinog Fawr, Y Llethr
Date walked: 03/01/2020
Time taken: 7 hours
Distance: 21.15km
Ascent: 1359m
As I was nearing the end of my Hewitt challenge I left an epic to finish the whole of Wales! With 5 peaks left to bag and a great walk to get 4 in!
I drove up to the end of Cwm Nantcol to do a circular of the southern Rhinogs. You can pay £2 at the farm and park at the end of the road.
We then headed north following the "footpath" towards an easterly wall (very wet and boggy), we then followed this wall to until we hit an intersection with a Northerly wall. Following this wall you then hit a great path to that takes you to the summit of Rhinog Fawr.
From the Summit we headed east and down the obvious gully. This was a bit wet and slippy in parts but was quite a nice descent. Once at the very soggy Bottom we headed straight over the style. I know in a few reports people have headed east and up some direct, we opted to head up towards the lakes and find a route. Luckily we discovered a route between the lakes that winded up the Rhinog Fach on great paths. In good time we made it to the top of Rhinog Fach for lunch
From this point the paths are good an obvious until after Diffwys. We headed south towards Y Llethr passing the beautiful looking Llyn Hywel. After a short steep section we hit rolling hills and made for very easy walking, within no time we hit the rather tame summit of Y Llethr. Some small ups and downs on clear paths (passing the tiny lake that looks like a pig or cow or fish or seal!!!) and we hit the final peak left in Wales!!!
From Diffwys we headed up its west top and then headed down to Llyn Bodly avoiding the cliffs. we then hit the road at the dam, followed this to a path that went over the col between Moelfre and Moelyblithcwm. Following the clear but wet path down back to the Cwm Nantcol road. We then walked along the road back to the van in the dark.
A great walk in a nice rugged part of Wales.
