Beinn Dubh and the Striddle Horseshoe
Route: Beinn Dubh - Glen Striddle horseshoe, Luss
Fionas: Beinn Dubh
Date walked: 09/03/2023
Time taken: 2.5 hours
Distance: 11.8km
Ascent: 726m
After coughing up £4 to park in Luss I set off across the bridge over the A82 with Mario the 13 year old staffy/mastif X.
There is no gentle walk in to get you warmed up. Almost immediately after the bridge you turn right through a gate and the path ramps up steeply and barely lets up until the summit of Beinn Dubh with the exception of a couple of short muddy flats that allow you brief respite. Thankfully the mud was frozen solid today. It was blowing an icy gale. Glad I had the woolly bunnet to keep the ears warm.
If you turn around at the summit and head back down then you're missing a fantastic walk around the broad ridge.
As you head north along the ridge the most amazing view opens up with the Arrochar Alps and Crianlarich hills lined up in front of you.
The walk around the horseshoe is fantastic until you have to drop back down. The route down is just as steep as the way up and a real leg buster. I was a relief to reach the road at the bottom.
The walk along the very quiet undulating country road takes you back to the start point.
This is a great walk only 40 min drive from Glasgow. Well worth it for the amazing views.
If you have a dog with you its worth noting there are sheep scattered about all over the hill and there is a stile to be negotiated on the way down.
