Waterloo Monument at New Abbey

Route: Waterloo Monument, from New Abbey

Date walked: 23/01/2021

Distance: 4.5km

We followed this route. I was struck by the lack of signage for the monument. The walk up the stone steps, coupled with the steepness will have you puffing for breath... be warned😉. However, it is a great walk, and on a day like we had the views are amazing. You can climb the stone steps inside the monument. These are wide enough for single file climbing only. There are no handrails and also the parapet at the top has no barriers. It’s a fantastic view from the top of the monument. On the decent we followed the gravel path at the back of the monument. We took the path to the right, this takes you through a lovely wood at the bottom, where when you meet the road you turn right to head back into New Abbey. A great walk and one we’d definitely do again. If you intend to climb up the monument, you may find a torch handy.
