Ben 'NO' More and Stob Binnein by Train from Glasgow

Route: Ben More and Stob Binnein

Munros: Ben More, Stob Binnein

Date walked: 21/04/2018

Time taken: 6 hours

The reports about Ben More being a steep ascent were true! Unrelenting and tough on the calfs ... woke up this morning being able to shuffle to the kitchen for coffee ..and back to bed again :?

For you fellow public transport users, I took the Oban train to Crianlarich and walked the 2 miles to the start point which is just after the farm on the right. ( turn right when you come out the station)

Armed my map and icompass (don't diss the iPhone tools it's useful) and WTH stages screenshots, I head up the zig zag path to the gate. It does say head straight up Ben More which I did, but I discovered on the return that if you continue up the track you can also climb both this way too. If you decide to take this route then follow the track, you veer left and there is a waterfall on the right of the path. Head up to the middle of these munros and take your pick which you do first. Return the same way or if you do Ben More second, then you can descend down the path on the left and use the brick stoney wall for a guide to the bottom. Here you rejoin where you started.

Heading up Ben More, quite boggy and unrelentless ... exactly like the reports said! At one point I was on my hands and knees bear crawling as my calfs were feeling the brunt of the climb. I eventually found a path by chance after what seemed like an eternity, the stoney path is to the right and near a stoney wall which I hadn't seen earlier from the start.

On the path now, feeling a bit more confident where I was going I reached a boulder verge, keep to the right of this and skirt around it. The summit is in sight from here Yey!

If you have a bit more juice in the tank and fancy doing Stob Binnein then head down towards it, veering left then straight down to the briefly flat section before ascending back up. A more enjoyable climb I promise .... the views at tge top are worth it!

Return the same way ... head left when at tge bottom, pass the waterfalls and head for the big massive rocks in the distance as a guide. You will meet the track which you follow to the gate at the start point.

To summarise ... Ben More was one big bad boy of a munro .. that is all!
