A relaxing walk along the Ardblair Trail

Route: Ardblair Trail & Bluebell Woods, Blairgowrie

Date walked: 01/02/2018

Time taken: 2.3 hours

Distance: 9.6km

Ascent: 79m

After having a job interview in the morning, we decided to take the rest of the day off and head to Blairgowrie for a long walk. We parked in the free car park just behind Tesco, and made our way through Blairgowrie to reach the Ardblair trail. From here we continued along the trail, meeting plenty of other jolly dog walkers.

Making our way along the Ardblair trail.

We reached the A923, and went right following the road for a short time, before making a left towards some farm buildings.

Part of the old farm buildings.

Continuing along the trail, we crossed the B947 and passed a care home to the left. As we followed the route we later came to a fork in the path with a sign pointing to Bluebell woods. We left the Ardblair trail and continued towards Bluebell woods.

We reached the old oak forest of Bluebell woods, and although it was winter, we still enjoyed the peaceful walk around the woodland. We have heard the woods are magnificent in the early summer with bluebells covering the forest floor. So we intend to return later in the year.

After exiting the woods through a gate, we crossed a field, reaching the beautiful Fingask Loch, where we spend a few minutes enjoying the scenery.

After leaving the Loch we shortly arrived at White Loch, which also looked stunning surrounded by a pine forest.

We had read that White loch was home to Beavers, and while we were unable to see any, there were plenty of trees nibbled along the lochs edge that suggested they were certainly around.

A munched tree truck.

Leaving whiteloch we made our way through Druidsmere Wood, before exiting onto the A93 where we followed a path shortly before making a left into a small housing area and back onto the Ardblair trail. We took a left through a gate and walked through Ardblair woods, before coming back onto the A93 and crossing to continue into Blairgowrie.

The final stretch of the walk consists of walking through housing areas in Blairgowrie following blue arrows, until eventually passing the Wellton Industrial Estate, and soon reach Tesco where the car park follows just round the corner.

Instead of heading straight home we decided to make a return trip to The Ericht Alehouse in Blairgowrie centre for a well deserved pint.

As a whole it was a great long flat walk that takes you out of Blairgowrie and lets you explore some of the countryside surroundings. Unfortunately we didn't get many photos, as we were too busy enjoying the gentle stroll. We look forward to doing this walk again later in the year.
