Whitburn Coastal Path

Date walked: 13/12/2018

Time taken: 2 hours

Distance: 8km

My first attempt at posting a route. This is one of my favourite wanders in an area of North East England. Starting at a free car park in Seaburn, Sunderland and taking you along a well established coastal path to the famous Souter Lighthouse. Souter was the first lighthouse in the world designed and built to be powered by electricity. Maintained by the National Trust, you can climb to the top. There is a little tea room and toilets in the summer months. There is a little area to the north side of the lighthouse which can be used for picnics during the months when the lighthouse itself is closed to the public which is handy.

The walk takes in beautiful golden sandy beaches at Seaburn, rock pools at Whitburn, a folly on Jackie's Beach, a nature trail and a well known landmark in the form of Souter Lighthouse. And you can finish it all off with a bag of chips from a popular kiosk when you arrive back in Seaburn.

It may be short but it is packed with wonderful scenery with lots of opportunities to add in your own adventures along the way such as building sandcastles, rock pooling or an history lesson at Souter Lighthouse. Seaburn has several restaurants and cafes where you can round of your day. There are also toilets on the promenade in Seaburn underneath the Fat Bhudha restaurant.
