Route: Ben Nevis by the Càrn Mòr Dearg Arête

Munros: Ben Nevis, Càrn Mòr Dearg

Date walked: 18/05/2024

Time taken: 12 hours

Distance: 20km

Ascent: 1506m

7 of us took on the mighty Ben Nevis yesterday via CMD. Myself, Paul, Lindsay, Kayleigh, Jesse, Malky & Stuart.

2 months in the planning, and we all know you can never guarantee Scottish weather and it’s going to be a gamble…. Well it completely paid off 😍

We stayed in Fort William on Friday night to allow for an early start. Parked in the North Face Car Park and off we set at 630am

First sight of Nevis

Good walking path initially which is signposted then onto a boggy path which peters out for the long steep ascent to CMD.

Plenty of water stops and breaks given the heat and to really enjoy the day and take it in!

From CMD you get a great view along the arete and up to Nevis

CMD Arete

The thought of crossing the Arete has played on my mind since I agreed to the walk. It was a matter of taking our time, to allow us to really enjoy the crossing and think where feet/hands were going. There is bypass paths avoiding some of the exposed sections, some of which we used, others we didn’t. Really enjoyed the arete and delighted we all made it over safely.

Then came the worst section of the day… the boulder field. Boulders, more boulders and more boulders. You’ve worked your socks off getting to this stage and honestly this was the last sight I wanted to see. Didnt appreciate how steep this was until we had came off the arete and we were standing at the bottom. We picked our way up and through the boulders to suddenly arrive on the summit of Ben Nevis

Never ending boulders

Absolutely delighted to have arrived on the top after looking at the north face all morning. First thing to be done was to Video Call dad! We spent a leisurely hour at the summit of Ben Nevis, soaking it all in and relaxing in the sun

Group photo on Ben Nevis

Followed the “tourist path” to descend to the Lochan. Must say the change of ground wasn’t appreciated by the group. Loose stony path, was glad to reach the Lochan where the path changed and then became a pathless descent through the grass, across the river where some had a wee dip and back onto the path which led us down and back to the car.

A couple of years ago I’d never have entertained the idea of taking the tourist track up Nevis never mind CMD I am delighted with myself and all 7 of us. We worked so well together, encouraged each other and had a brilliant day out.

In the words of Stuart “it was not bad”
