Bracken and blockages
Route: Mortlich circuit, Aboyne
Date walked: 26/09/2020
Time taken: 4 hours
Distance: 10.25km
I have done this walk a few times - but not recently, and was interested in the changes! At stage 3 the signpost to turn left is now obvious and the path on up to the top of Mortlich hill has been well walked - and opened out - so is much clearer than it used to be. However when you descend from the hill and want to turn left through the now broken - kissing gate the wall of bracken is almost impenetrable. I started on the vestigial path I knew was there, but soon lost it so had to force my way through a jungle of bracken, broom and occasional rocks. Challenging and dangerous!. I found the path at the other end but had to cast about to find the route to the stepping-stones. Thereafter the walk was fine and very enjoyable, though getting overgrown in places. I do wonder if the path could be opened up, as this second section makes the walk much more complete! On the upside, the blockages mentioned by others on the old railway line have been resolved and notices remind us that it is a right of way!
