... but you can't take the bog out of the man. Saturday was a bit misty in places as we crawled up the A9 doing the obligatory 45mph behind a row of traffic and it looked like there might be inversion opportunities over the bigger stretch of waters. The Cromarty had a slight cloak of mist, but as we came over the Struie, but it was obvious the Dornoch Firth and the Kyle were wearing the whole wardrobe.

From Struie Hill can't see a Viewpoint

I'd been up Strathcarron before to climb Breac-Bheinn, so knew the area relatively well and had prepared myself fully for the ever present boggery. We parked at the end of the forestry track as there was loads of room to leave the car without blocking the gate and headed for the waterlogged track up past Whale Cottage.

Who would live in a place like this? Find out as we go through the keyhole...

Once past the Cottage, it's a case of following the ATV track up the left-hand side of the stream until Meall Dheirgidh looms into view. The views improve as height is gained.

At the foot of Meall Dheirgidh, we followed the Deer Fence up to the small Cairn. This was the driest part of the day but there is lurking swamp just below the top.

The fence was on the ground at the top, which allowed us access to the cairn, but if this is repaired in the future, it may easier to cross over to the right-hand side lower down to save a perilous climb at the summit.

....which was unworried by us enough to pose for photos

We descended via the same ATV track as the light had changed and I believed the view would be better staying east of Meall nan Eun.
A good half-day out with really decent views if you enjoy the smaller hill.
