Cruise-Walk Inversnaid to Rowardennan

Date walked: 19/07/2013

Time taken: 3 hours

Distance: 11km

Ascent: 150m

I enjoy walking parts of the West Highland Way, going by Citylink to the start of the walk and returning home after a walk of about 10km or more. I have mainly walked from Inveranan Northwards and to Balmaha on the East side of Loch Lomond. An article in the Scottish Walks magazine gave me some inspiration to try something slightly different. A cruise from Tarbet to Inversnaid, a 12km walk to Rowardennan and a cruise back to Tarbet.

I purchased a Rambler 2 ticket, which includes a liquid refreshment on the return journey. The boat leaves Tarbet at 1130 and arrives at Inversnaid at 1200. There is ample time to walk to Rowardennan as the boat does not leave there until 1645 arriving at Tarbet at 1730. The whole route can be completed in reverse leaving Tarbet at 1000.

The walk provides excellent views of the west side of Loch Lomond. The waterfall at Inversnaid was more like a trickle of water due to the unusually dry, sunny weather. The first part of the walk was on a narrow track through the woods which provided some shade from the sun. After Cailness Cottage, the path eventually widens as it rises to the higher route to Rowardennan.

I have posted 34 photos on Flickr as a set: Cruise-Walk the West Highland Way. They can be viewed by going to:

I arrived in Rowardennan around 1500 so I had ample time to enjoy the scenery there before going to th Youth Hostel for the boat back to Tarbet.
