Wintry conditions up Hill of Fare
Route: Hill of Fare: northern approach
Sub 2000s: Hill of Fare
Date walked: 02/01/2023
Time taken: 1.75 hours
Distance: 6.5km
Ascent: 200m
This was my first time up Hill of Fare.
The car park is quite shaded, so there was lots of snow and ice. Also huge pot holes!
Encountered a large group on their descent - all the kids had sleds and were delighted by the snow.
The walk through the forest is straight forward on a forestry road.
Met a family on a cross-country ski adventure.
After a gate the track turns off to the left, but the path continues straight up and becomes quite narrow in places. At this point the trees begin to thin out and the views begin to open up to the south and west. Clachnaben being perhaps the most distinctive peak with its rocky outcrop.
Eventually you reach the summit plateau. A small cairn is off to the right.
To reach the summit cairn follow the track a bit more and keep an eye to the left. The summit cairn is quite small and could easily be missed. It's off to the left. Some truly majestic views can now be enjoyed from the sea to the Cairngorms. Bennachie is off to the north-west.
We re-traced our steps back to the car. More care had to be taken as it was quite icy. Off for some well-deserved hot chocolate.
