Allander and Kelvin Walkways

Route: Kelvin Walkway: Glasgow to Milngavie

Date walked: 16/01/2012

Time taken: 3 hours

Distance: 10.5km

Ascent: 47m

We walked this route in reverse, Milngavie towards Glasgow, to verify its suitability for a future, larger group of walkers but gave up at Maryhill in disgust. There were many fallen trees blocking the route but, with a little bush craft, determination and occasional climbing and crawling, the path was just passable. However, it was not this that put us off but the incredible amount of rubbish strewn along the entire length of the river as well as in trees, hedgerows, fields, even in private gardens. Without exaggeration, there were numerous supermarket trolleys and literally tens of thousands of plastic and glass bottles, beer cans, polystyrene cups and every other kind of litter imaginable. Almost the entire length that we walked was like walking through a rubbish tip and not at all pleasant. This is not a route that I will ever walk again or recommend to others.
